PAGAN ALTAR
Formed in 1976 by Alan and Terry Jones, Pagan Altar plays heavy rock music in it's most literal sense, and despite no label interest in the late 70's and early 80's, the timelessness of their music ultimately prevailed as minions of doom-obsessed metalheads kept Pagan Altar's music alive over two and a half decades

Mid-first decade of the 21st century, the group had reformed to re-record an album of material written, but never released during their original tenure as a band. That album, Lords of Hypocrisy, has been met with an incredible reception from fans of doom both old and new, this was followed by a third full length, namely the Mythical and Magical album. Currently, Pagan Altar is back on the road after over 20 years of silence, to play select gigs worldwide to the bands loyal and ever increasing fanbase with new members behind Alan and Terry to form the backbone of the bonecrunching Pagan Altar live sound...Joining them on bass is Diccon Harper (Ex-Voice Of Destruction & Dragonforce), Andy Green on drums, and Rich Walker on rhythm guitar (of Solstice & Isen Torr)

Behind the Cloak, an exceedingly more detailed and painstaking account of Pagan Altar history than this may be read at the bands' website. There you may also find other information and order Pagan Altar merchandise.

DEVILMAKESTHREE
Established in Autumn 2002, when founding member Marty Robinson invited Paul Duffy and Dave McCallum to jam on a few tracks he'd been working .. just one practice, the guys knew they were onto something special and the trio locked themselves in a practice room and perfected six songs. Three songs from these demo recordings were then released -"Caution: Will Cause Neck Injury" to worldwide critical acclaim.

To bring the Devilmakesthree experience to a live audience the band were aided initially by Honey for Christ guitarist Andy Clarke until a full time member was found in the man-mountain that is Gavin Coulter. Now with a steady live line up and new material continuously being written, the band focused on an active future.

With a second demo CD released - "Voice of the Undergound", the bands writing showed a growth and maturity uncommon to bands so early in their career. Again this was received to great acclaim throughout the local scene and beyond, and coupled with the bands pro-active nature of gigs, promotion and merchandising, the band were now known throughout the land. As Devilmakesthree nailed their live show, they continued to demo new tracks, some of which were available on download from their website. The quality of these tracks have lead to the decision to record and release their first EP independantly. Recording will begin in early August 2004 for the EP which is to be tiltled "Vacuum Tube Rapture"

March 2005 Marty Robinson left the band to pursue other interests. While leaving a void in the band, it has not stopped the devilmakesthree machine turning. In the interim Steve Moore Of Condemned fame stepped up to the plate learned a bunch of songs and hit the gigging circuit with the remaining three members with Dave now on vocals and Gav on Backing vocals. Fortunatley this turned to be positive move and the response from the metal loving public has been overwhelming. Coming to the tail end of 2005 the guys have retired to their respective caves to work on new music and intend to come back with a new guitarist and more brutal material to torture people in 2006. You have been warned.2008 has rolled round and another shift in personnel, the band parted company with Steve Hobson early 08 and now have Jay Rogers ex Altus Astrum and current Vomitous drummer on board. The band are now ready to record very soon and a release should be expected over the coming months with plenty of live dates to accompany the release.

Gigs Next Week.

Black of The South are no more
As this chapter of the band is laid to rest, rising from the remains, a new line up and a new name.
Read the the official press release

Taken from the bands Myspace page

PRESS RELEASE - ''We're Back - New Name!!!''

We're pleased to announce that we are back from our hiatus!!! But with a difference...

We have officially changed our band name. We from now on will be known as Utopian Ruins. It was decided that we had gone as far as we could go with Black of the South and that a big change was needed. So we have acquired a second guitarist, Shane Booth and were very happy to have him on board.
The new name suits our lyrical theme better and with a new man on board we hope we can take this new thing to the next level.

Plan's are still in place with a busy summer layed out. Irish tours will commence shortly and will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Also album recording plans will continue as schduled with recording to begin in the new year.
More to follow on this shortly.

In the mean time we will be playing a support slot show next month with Belgian Metal outfit Thurisaz.
Thats Friday the 24th of April in The Stables, Mullingar.

Keep checking out our myspace page for updates, tour info, merch and releases in the coming weeks.
Our main website is gone under construction and be live in a few weeks time.

All the best for now

I haven't had a chance to update the site much this last month, but better late then never.

Bad Boat

Bad Boat are re-releasing a limited edition 100 CD's of the EP 'Lonely Doom'

Track listing:

Lonely Doom
Mechanical World

Lucky to be Breathing
Uphill Struggle

The first 3 tracks feature founding member Graeme Heyburn on Guitar.
Tracks 1 + 3 were recorded a over year ago, though Graeme did return to record the Spirit cover 'Mechanical World' at the bands last recording session early february
The last track on the EP 'Uphill Struggle' was recorded with current Bad Boat line-up and introduces new drummer Michael McGoran.

The Cd will be available on the Riff-Fest tour which kicked-off on Thursday 5th March in Belfast.
You can contact Bad Boat via their site www.badboat.org to reserve a copy.

There is also a planned 12” split with Haieeta sometime this year.
The split will feature a re-recorded song 'The World is Yours' off the bands first demo 'Oblivion Switch' and another song the lads have played live many times but have never recorded called 'Solemn Face in Pain'.

Smoking Sessions - Vol 2

Yes the second volume of Irelands Stoner/Metal compilation will be released later this year.
So hope to have a bit more news on this pretty soon.

Engines of Ruin

Latest update from the studio: Well unfortunately we haven't been able to get back to complete the tracks for the last few weeks.
However after taking the tracks away and hearing them on fresh ears we have decided that the guitars need to be re-recorded. So the plan is to arrange a date for guitars and get back in and complete the EP.

During this time out of the studio we have managed to acquire our own rehearsal room which allows us to play as loud and for as long as we want and its really starting to come together.

Other great news is we have added a new member to the band, yes after searching high and low E.O.R have finally found a singer.

So I'd like to welcome our new vocalist Greg Fitzpatrick to the band

New Line-Up:

Greg Fitzpatrick - Vocals
Adam Brewer - Guitar
Graham Cowley - Bass
Johnny Brewer - Drums

In mid April we will be doing some recording with producer and band friend Grant Macleod, we are really exited about this.

A Tribute To Kyuss
During the week I posted on a few forums looking for Irish bands to contribute to a tribute album to Kyuss.

So far the response has been great.

For anyone who's not aware, I'm looking for bands to send me a rough demo of a Kyuss song they want to cover.
From these demo's I'll pick the 12 bands then get each band into the studio for a day to record their chosen song.

Once we have the album recorded I'll organise a launch night in a venue in Dublin.
Keep checking for updates.

If you've any questions mail me: thelowendreview@gmail.com

Engines of Ruin EP Update
We entered Redlab Studios this month with Dave Ivers to start recording the Hellectrfied EP.

So far all drums and bass have been recorded, we should get all guitar tracks done by next week before taking a week off.
After the break we'll focus on the vocals and get down to some serious mixing with an aim to get the EP out by March.

After the release we will be shooting a video for Hellectrified which will be featuring us in some sweet muscle cars so watch this space for more details on that.

Black Of The South Taking a Break
The band issued the following on the 24/01/09

Hey all,

We're sorry to announce that Black of the South will be going on a hiatus until some point in the future. Jordan(vocalist) & Cozzy(drummer) have decided to reform their old band Rule of Honour. Sean(bassist) will be filling in on bass duties for them aswell.
BotS would like to thank all the people who came to our shows and all the promoters who dealt with us.

Hopefully in the future we will be back to rip it up again.

All the best for now

So if you want a hard copy just post here so we can gauge the numbers

featured band

21/11/08

With the 'Brant Bjork & the Bros' gigs almost upon us I thought a double band feature was needed.

First up BadBoat from Belfast.

badboat_group

It's easy to see why their debut album was given the name 'Blues gone Black', as BadBoat are most definitely the darkside of the blues melding punk & metal styles with heavy boozed up 70's influenced grooves.

Tom Clarke's vocals come at you like a kick in the nuts, each word delivered with pure power and grit.
With killer guitar riffs that stick in your head backed up by the well oiled rhythm machine of Neil Ward & Michael McGoran.
BadBoat give a middle finger salute to what you thought rocked and ask to you to open your ears to their apocalyptic blues.

Next we have.

Dope smoking, whiskey gusling, hard rocking machine” or 'Black of The South' for short.

Blackofthesouth_group

A four piece from Portlaoise, serving up big slices of classic gritty blues rock with nods to Sabbath, Zeppelin and Down.

On November 1
st this year they released their debut EP Nation Under Siege.

From the opening snare roll to the belt in the face riff , title track Nation under Siege bolts into gear a stonking, fist pumping tune that sets the tone for what BOTS are all about. Big guitar / bass riffs, powerhouse drums and catchy vocals that rock.

Get your hands on Nation under Siege now.
It can be downloaded at www.outersounds.ie
also available in record shops in Dublin city centre Soundcellar & Sentinel Records

Leading up to the EPs official launch night (13/12/08) BOTS have bagged the opening slot at Brant Bjork & the Bros in Eamon Dorans, 24th Nov.

You need to see these bands live and luckily for you, you can catch BadBoat in Belfast at The Bunker 23rd Nov. & BadBoat and B.O.T.S in Dublins Eamon Dorans 24th Nov.

Brigantia
On first listen to the tracks on Brigantia’s MySpace I can’t but help compare with a huge smile I may add, elements in these songs which remind me of two of my favourite bands Cathedral and Electric Wizard.

Brigantia Picture 003

They take what afore mentioned bands have given us, and they twist it up with their own heavy Tipperary doomlordnessity, (is that even a word? fuk it, ya know what I mean).

From the scraping thunderous lowend (a word you may hear a lot of on here!) bellows of Neill Nevin's Bass.
The solid guitar riffs of Dave Gleeson’s strings of filth, along with his evil howls, growls, and melodic vocal parts, to the thumping rhythmic war glue of John Clarkes drums, keeping it all flowing along in dark harmony.

The sum of all parts make this band an absolute joy to listen to, and one band I just cant wait to hear more from.

So if you haven’t already heard or availed of the free ‘Chronicles of Doom’ demo, do so as quickly as possible.

This is one great Doom band from Ireland.

A.B
